The actress Jessica Lange has made headlines with her claim that there are fewer great roles for women in films today. This is something of an old chestnut; people (especially actresses) have been saying it for years. And of course, it’s absolutely true. Lange also said – and this was the bit that didn’t make as many headlines – that the level of scriptwriting on TV (by which she meant American TV) was superior to that of films. Again, she was spot-on; but this was the more interesting point
