Key conclusions and recommendations for EURO-MEI and EWA network joint project on closing the gender pay gap in the European audiovisual industry
UNI Europa's Media, Entertainment, and Arts sector (EURO-MEI) and the European Women's Audiovisual Network (EWA) are releasing three publications aimed at putting under the spotlight the gender pay gap in the European audiovisual industry, and at promoting actions to address and close this pay gap.
The resources published offer tools and advice to professionals and organisations in the audiovisual industry to act for more equality in the sector, with an emphasis on promoting pay transparency, supporting women's careers, and fostering more open discussions about remunerations.
The first publication is a “Call for Action” asking sector organisations to upgrade their commitment for gender equality by also taking actions on the front of the gender pay gap. The document outlines the importance of pay transparency to close the gender pay gap, as highlighted by the recently adopted EU Pay Transparency Directive. It puts forward recommendations for actions to promote pay transparency also in the audiovisual sector; an industry composed of many small size companies and a very high share of self-employed professionals.
The second publication " We All Need to Change" encourages individual actions for a change of culture around pay transparency and pay negotiations in the audiovisual sector. The document puts forward recommendations to better negotiate, to support pay transparency at individual level, but also outlines how collective action on pay could bring about change.
The last publication "Don’t Fear Gender Pay Gap Reporting” provides practical advice for employers on why and how to commit to more pay transparency. It offers them practical advice on how to collect, analyse, and report gender pay data.
With these publications, set to be distributed across Europe and beyond, EURO-MEI and the EWA network advocate for a cultural shift towards more transparency and equality, offering strategies that empower professionals and organizations to make meaningful progress.
The gender pay gap has long-term detrimental effects on women's lives and on their careers. Gender equality strategies and policies therefore need to systematically integrate actions to address and correct the gender pay gap. Meaningful progress will require joint efforts across the audiovisual industry.
