Masterclass with film director Teona Mitevska
We are delighted to host North Macedonian director Teona Strugar Mitevska, an acclaimed film director in a masterclass for EWA members.
Mitevska will talk to Alexia Muiños Ruiz about how her career took off when her shortfilm VETA received an award in the Berlinale 2001 and how she struggled to be the first woman producing a film in Macedonia, twenty years ago until she produced and directed a feminist comedy such as GOD EXISTS AND HER NAME IS PETRUNYA .

WHAT ARE EWA NETWORK ONLINE HANG-OUTS?
Through an online space where EWA members from all around can connect and know each other, we organise once a month a meeting where an expert introduces a topic followed by Q&A and members can interact. Each meeting will last 75 minutes aprox and it's open to 20-25 EWA members, who can introduce themselves and participate in the following Q&A.

Teona Strugar Mitevska was born in 1974 in an artistic family in Skopje, Macedonia. She started as a child actor, trained as a painter and a graphic designer and later studied at M.F.A program in film at the Tisch School of Arts, New York University. She made her debut as short film director in 2001 with Veta (Special Jury Prize at Berlin Film Festival 2002). How I Killed a Saint (Rotterdam Film Festival, Tiger Awards 2004) is her first feature made under the auspices of SISTERS AND BROTHER MITEVSKI, a company she established together with her brother Vuk and sister Labina.
I am From Titov Veles premiered at the 2007 Toronto Film festival (Discovery Section), and was shown in Berlin Film Festival 2008 (Panorama) and Cannes film festival (ACID).
The Woman Who Brushed Off Her Tears premiered at 2012 Berlin Film (Panorama Special) and in 2014 she shot and edited Teresa and I, a feature documentary on Mother Teresa, told through the perspective of a contemporary woman of today, herself.
In 2016, When The Day Had No Name, premiered at the 2017 Berlin Film Festival (Panorama Special). The film tells a story of Macedonian Youth and their inability to define themselves other than “Macho“ men.
God Exists, Her Name Is Petrunya shot in January 2018, premiered in competition in Berlin Film Festival 2019 where it was awarded the Ecumenical Prize, as well as the German Guild Film Prize. Until today the film has received more than 30 awards internationally, most notably the 2019 LUX Prize by the European Parliament and was sold for theatrical release to over 40 territories world-wide. In 2018, France’s Ministry of Culture awarded her the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Letres. . The film was sold for theatrical release to over 40 territories world-wide.
The Happiest Man in the World, 2022 premiered at the 79th edition of the Venice Film Festival in the Orizzonti sidebar. The film won the Grand Prize at the 2022 Les Arcs Film Festival. It was selected as the Macedonian entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards
Since its founding, SISTERS AND BROTHER MITEVSKI, have co-produced The Wild Pear Tree by Nuri Bilge Ceylan; Nightlife and Half-sister by Damjan Kozole and Sierranevada by Christi Puiu. In 2018, France’s Ministry of Culture awarded her the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Letters. Teona Strugar Mitevska lives between Skopje and Brussels with her son Kaeliok.
Her next film, Mother (2025), has just wrapped production.
