Wrapping up Cannes 2017

The 70th edition of the Cannes Film Festival has been quite remarkable regarding the number of awards the films directed by women received, despite their low ratio in the official competition.

Sophia Coppola’s "The Beguiled" won best direction; Lynne Ramsay won best screenplay ex-aequo for "You Were Never Really Here" and Nicole Kidman won the special 70th aniversary prize. The Ecumenical Jury Prize went to Naomi Kawase’s Competition title "Hikari" (Radiance).

For the 2nd year, the Caméra d’or Award went to a women with "Jeune femme" (Montparnasse Bienvenüe) by Léonor SERRAILLE.

 

Director’s Fortnight also acknowledged women’s films:
ART CINEMA award went to "The Rider" by Chloé Zhao.
SACD prize to "Bright Sunshine in" by Claire Denis.

"LOS DESHEREDADOS" by Laura Ferrés wins Leica Cine Discovery Prize for short films at Critic’s Week.

SACD award for best writer goes to Léa Mysius ("AVA") and Canal+ Award for short films to NAJPIĘKNIEJSZE FAJERWERKI EVER by Aleksandra TerpiÅ„ska.

The Cinéfondation celebrated 16 student films, chosen out of 2 600 entries coming from 626 film schools around the world and they gave their 1st prize to Paul est là (Paul Is Heredirected by Valentina MAUREL

During this year’s Festival, EWA NETWORK had the privilege to attend several discussions about women’s undervalued presence in film industry and how to change this.

Seminar focusing on how a more equal film business brings new stories to the screen while reaching a global audience. Organised by the Swedish Film Institute and moderated by Anna Serner with Jessica Hausner and Agnieszka Holland.

 

EWA's networking event took place on Sunday 21 May at South-East European Pavilion

EWA’s traditional networking drinks co-organised with our friends from the Film Center Serbia. 

 

Monday 22 May, 16h - Gender Recommendations conference. SACD pavillion.

Francine Raveney explained the Draft recommendation on Gender Equality in the Audiovisual Sector, which has been prepared in collaboration with Eurimages. Follow the link for more insights on the pan-European Research on Women directors.
