Jane Campion at the Swedish Cinematheque

This April and May, the Swedish Cinematheque will screen films directed by women only, and will have Jane Campion as its guest of honour, for a live interview on stage. Among the films screened is the legendary punk and metal trilogy, The Decline of Western Civilization by Penelope Spheeris, Deepa Mehta's Element Trilogy, Iran's first ever vampire-western-horror-pic, portraits of working-class women by Márta Mészáros, and five films by Kathryn Bigelow, the first woman to be awarded an Academy Award for Best Directing.

The Swedish Cinematheque, Cinemateket, will screen some of the greatest films in history in its Stockholm programme for April and May. But for the first time ever, the entire program consists solely of films directed by women. Candace Droguett, head of Cinemateket at The Swedish Film Institute:
– The Swedish Cinematheque has, for quite some time, promoted women directors in its screening programmes. It's our way of challenging the idea of there being no women directors of significance in the history of cinema.

Jane Campion – who is currently writing the next season of Top of the Lake – will be interviewed on stage on the 26th of April, in Cinemateket's main cinema in the Film House in Stockholm.
" I am so excited to be visiting Scandinavia, and for the very first time! I have been saving it up and now I am coming for everything that is ordinary and extraordinary about Sweden. I guess I am half expecting it to be in black and white after so many years of watching Bergman, even his name sends a shiver down me. Plus I am crazy for crime novels and TV series, and Sweden is awash with it."

Campion usually keeps her public appearances to a minimum, but when she does speak, she is known for criticizing the film industry for its male dominance.

"We are very happy and proud that Jane Campion finally accepted our invitation. Convincing her to come all the way from Australia to Sweden wasn't easy, but the fact that we're only screening films directed by women might have helped. "

Other guests include Argentine director Celina Murga and the sought after Belgian silent film pianist Hilde Nash, who will play live to four of French avant-garde director Germaine Dulac's films, on the 11th and 12th of April.
