Hanna SLAK awarded Best Director at the Festival of Slovenian film with RUDAR/The Miner

Slovenian director Hanna SLAK (EWA member) has been awarded BEST DIRECTOR at the Festival of Slovenian film for her 3rd feature film RUDAR // The Miner. The international premiere of the film is coming up in the competition of an A-Festival and will be announced later this month. The film is coming to the Slovenian cinemas on September 28th.

At the same event, Leon LuÄev received the Best Actor award for his role of Alija, the miner. Vlado Gojun was awarded for Best Edit.

RUDAR // The Miner is based on a true story of an immigrant miner in Slovenia, who in a sealed mine, deep underground, finds thousands of bodies of people thrown into a pit after WW2. He affronts the society by insisting to arrange a funeral for those unidentified victims, thus risking his job, the wellbeing of his family, and even his own life.

Among 10 fiction feature films competing this year, RUDAR was the only one directed by a woman director. In her speech on stage Slak dedicated the award to the new and coming generation of Slovenian women directors with a wish that there would open a lot more space for them on the Slovenian film stage.

In Slovenia, Slak was the second woman to ever direct a feature film with her debut Blind Spot (2002). The first was Maja Weiss with Guardian of the frontier earlier that same year (2002). Since then, there had been some more, but like elsewhere in Europe women directors are often seen directing shorts, low budget films, documentaries and TV films.
