Women filmmakers will rock the 18th Malaga Film Festival

Sixteen female directors will be presenting their feature films in the official sections of the 18th Málaga Film Festival. Mabel Lozano and Isabel Coixet will be presenting their films out of competition. “Learning to Drive” by Isabel Coixet, will be screened out of competition, alongside a documentary about her career, co-produced by the festival. She will be awarded the retrospective Award

In official competition there are 2 films out of 14 directed by women, in these case by 2 young directors with their debut fllms: Manuela Moreno “Sobreviviendo a una despedida” ("Surviving a Farewell") and Leticia Dolera “Requerimientos para ser una persona normal” ("Requirements for a normal person").

In the Latin American section “Wedding Dress” by Marilyn Solaya will be screened.

In the special section : “Aragón rodado” by Vicky Calavia, “En Tierra extraña” by Iciar Bollain, “Energizing Our World” by Susan Sember, “Las Sinsombrero” co-directed by Serrana Torres, Tania Ballo and Manuel Núñez Jiménez and “Robles, Duelo al sol” by Sonia Tercero Ramiro will be screened.

In the documentary section the following films are being screened by female directors:

"24 Hour New Girls by Mabel Lozano, which shows step by step how to set up a business worth 32 billion dollars a year. A business where everything is profit, as the body of a woman, if they are young, they can be sold multiple times throughout the day even against their will. Mix mockumentary with research across five countries, the film depicts the big business of sexual slavery.

Game Over” by Alba Sotorra, produced by EWA member, Marta Figueras. This is the story of a boy fascinated by war games. When he goes to a real conflict zone he finds it to be just as fascinating as in the movies.

"The big flight" by Carolina Astudillo is set in the early years of the Franco dictatorship, when Clara Pueyo Jornet, a Communist Party member, escaped from the prison of Les Corts. At that time her mark was lost forever. Her story is also the story of the women of her time and her struggle for freedom in that society.

"The home upside down" by Itzel Martínez del Cañizo. This film reflects the situation of women and children in an unfair country, in which the former work night and day away from home, while their children learn to survive in emptiness and loneliness.

"Goodbyes" by Carole Laganiere, is an immersion in a hospice, the Michel-Sarrazin House, in the city of Quebec (Canada).

"Next" by Elia Urquiza, explores the world of girls aged 6 to 16 years, who move to Los Angeles to pursue a universal dream: to become stars.

"Salgán and Salgán" by Caroline Neal, is an intimate portrait of the relationship between Horacio Salgán, legendary tango pianist, aged 98 , and his son Cesare, also a pianist, who plays his father music in his shadow. Recently reunited after 18 years without seeing each other.

The section Supporting Women's Rights will screen the films "Boxing for Freedom" by Juan Antonio Moreno and Silvia Venegas; "El viaje de las reinas" by EWA member Patricia Roda and Tocaorasby Alicia Cifredo.
