Rethinking the Role of Women in Cultural and Media Professions. A European AnalysisBack

This spring, the Hertie School of Governance will host an expert symposium on Rethinking the Role of Women in Cultural and Media Professions in the European context. EWA Network has been invited to participate in this high-level exchange among experts on current efforts to advance gender equality and the empowerment of women in cultural and media professions in Europe. EWA member Suzanne Pradel will present the key findings from the EWA´s research project Where are the women directors in European Films? and explain EWA´s proposals and activities in this field.
The two-day event will take place on May 10-11, 2017 at the Hertie School in Berlin. It will begin with two short impulse statements by Monika Grütters, MdB, Minister of State to the Federal Chancellor, Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, and by Virginija Langbakk, Director of the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) (tbc). Following the keynotes, there will be a moderated panel discussion among experts on current monitoring trends, policy measures, and their progress or deficits towards closing the gender pay gap and breaking the “glass ceiling”. The discussion will continue on the following day as an intensive workshop comparing the situation in six selected European member states. The evening event will be open to honoured guests, students and the general public; the workshop will be a closed session for invited experts only.
The workshop shall serve as a forum to discuss and modify interim results of a research project currently underway at the Hertie School Centre for Cultural Policy. The point of origin for our report is the newest study, published in June 2016 by the German Cultural Council, on the actual conditions and related policies for the German national context (Gabriele Schulz, Carolin Ries, Olaf Zimmermann:Frauen in Kultur und Medien – Ein Überblick über aktuelle Tendenzen, Entwicklungen und Lösungsvorschläge.
