#10 February 2016

Dear members and friends of EWA,

In 2013 our network was courageously set up in its present form by Francine Raveney, supported by a handful of passionate volunteers. Now, three years on, Francine has passed the torch and I’m thrilled to join the team as the new Director.

Over her three years as Director, Francine worked tirelessly to build up the network and to position EWA as the European reference in promoting gender equality in the audiovisual industry. Advocacy, research and training have been the main activities initiated and carried out by Francine and the EWA team. On behalf of EWA’s executive board, team, members and friends I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Francine for her vision, leadership and hard work! I am also delighted that Francine will stay onboard as Head of PR and Research.

EWA’s executive board also has two new members, the Oscar-winning producer Ewa Puszczynska and Marie-Pierre Valle, Head of Acquisitions at Wild Bunch. Thanks to Ewa and Marie-Pierre for accepting to become a part of the EWA family!

EWA’s report on “Where are Women Directors in Europe?” was released at the Berlinale and covers seven European countries. The study provides further concrete evidence of the way that the audiovisual industry’s functioning discriminates against women. However, there is also a growing awareness that this situation needs to be changed. To make this change happen we need to work on different layers. We must continue lobbying at the institutional and industry level for the systemic changes to happen, but as women professionals we also need to strengthen ourselves through supporting each other and building on other women’s success stories.

I intend to reinforce and to develop our network through activities such as a mentoring programme for producers and directors, the organisation of focused networking events during major national and international festivals and closer links with other women’s professional associations.

In order to fulfill EWA’s mission, it is clear that I will need the active moral and financial support of more members, in more countries and from more diversified professions!

Finally, I want you to know that I am honored to take on this role and look forward to personally connecting with you. Please feel free to reach out to me directly and to stay in touch. Your comments, feedback, and ideas are always welcome.
