Editorial: Welcome to EWA

Dear EWA friend, we are delighted to welcome you to our inaugural newsletter. Since signing the EWA statutes on 26 January in Strasbourg last year, the EWA team has been working hard to ensure that our association can actively bring about change and improve gender equality in the audiovisual sector for the benefit of its members.

The next event EWA will be present at is the Göteborg International Film Festival.EWA Director Francine Raveney will be participating in a panel event and will be available for meetings from 28 January. Read more


Berlinale. EWA is co-hosting a round table event with our partners at the Hungarian Cultural Centre of Berlin on Sunday 9 February followed by a small networking reception to which all members are invited – rsvp confirmed attendance essential. More details.

EWA 2013 calendar


EWA has already started preparatory work for its first resarch project, a four-country analysis investigating gender balance and imbalance and strategies for change to be delivered by Berlinale 2015. Read more

The Eurimages Film Fund has started monitoring gender balance in those projects which are selected and rejected as has the CNC in France. See Data monitoring sections for more news on this research.

The latest research report from the European Audiovisual Observatory will be disclosed at the Cannes Film Festival and you will be able to consult this information through www.ewawomen.com

Advocacy and EWA

EWA is engaging in policy dialogue with relevant actors at European level to enhance the role of female professionals in the audiovisual sector.Turkish legal expert Aslihan Tekin is our specialist advocacy advisor in Brussels.Read more

We are also working with many MEPs, in particular, Nadja Hirsch, who hosted the EWA “No Place for young women” dinner debate in Strasbourg in December. Read more.

Eurimages News. We are looking forward to revealing news about policy change on gender concerning the Eurimages film fund. Read more.



Partnerships are a vital means of bringing about change and EWA is especially excited to have developed close working relationships with many film funds and women’s networks and organisations from throughout Europe and internationally as well as other partners, including FERA, UNIC, SAA, Images 25 and Directors’ UK as well as the Turkish Producers’ association.Read more

Our next bridge-building event will be held during the Berlinale. 


25-27 October 2013 Barcelona. The Pitcher Perfect training course, hosted by EWA honorary member, Jan Miller took place in collaboration with SGAE in Barcelona. Participants came from throughout the world and were given expert feedback from international producers, distributors, and packaging experts.Read more
